UK: MOBILE PHONE NETWORKS TO INVEST GB[pound] 12BN
Article Abstract:
The move toward third-generation mobile phone networks will see GB[pound] 12bn invested over the next decade. President of Lucent Technologies' GSM/UMTS division John Hughes expects GB[pound] 6bn to be spent getting five universal mobile telecoms system (UMTS) up and running by 2002 and a further GB[pound] 6bn spent by the operators over the following five years. There are 13 prospective UMTS licence bidders up for five licences in a government-sponsored auction to be held by April. The greater radio band frequency provided by UMTS technology will allow videophones and transaction services using Net protocol technology. Less revenue as a percentage will come from voice calls, as the phones are able to offer extra functions currently performed by Internet service providers. They derive revenue from advertising, content and transactions.

UK: WIRELESS AUCTION IS DEFERRED
Article Abstract:
As a result of the current poor showing of the telecommunications sector, the government has deferred its auction of wireless service lines until November 2000. It had originally been due to start this week. Eleven companies are in the frame for the auction including Energis, Norweb Telecom and US-based Winstar Communications and, unlike Orange which withdrew last week, they seem likely to remain.
